A MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY
The City of Compton and the Planning and Development Department want to help
residents, contractors, architects, developers and anyone else interested in understanding
how to build an accessory dwelling unit or a junior accessory dwelling unit in our beautiful
city. This webpage is here to walk you through the various steps of understanding how to
build an ADU on your property.
WHAT ARE ADUs?
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) have been known by many names: granny flats, in-law
units, backyard cottages, secondary units, and more. No matter what you call them, ADUs
are an innovative, affordable, effective option for adding much-needed housing in California.
“Accessory dwelling unit” (also “ADU”) shall have the same meaning as set forth in California
Government Code Section 65852.2, as amended from time to time.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ADUs?
ADUs are an affordable type of home to construct in California because they do not generally require paying for land, major new infrastructure, structured parking, or elevators.
ADUs can provide a source of income for homeowners.
ADUs are built with cost-effective wood frame construction, which is significantly less costly than homes in new multifamily infill buildings.
ADUs can provide as much living space as many newly built apartments and condominiums, and they’re suited well for couples, small families, friends, young people, and seniors.
ADUs give homeowners the flexibility to share independent living areas with family members and others, allowing seniors to age in place as they require more care.

CONCEPTUAL ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT PLANS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC
The City of Compton in partnership with the Southern California Association of Governments has prepared four conceptual ADU plan sets available without charge to the citizens of Compton for use in building an ADU on their property. There are plans for several different ADU types, however, these plans do not include a site plan, structural details or energy calculations . You must prepare your own site plan, structural details and energy calculations and attach it to the city plan set. It is highly recommended that you contact the Building and Safety Department and discuss how to best use these plan sets. Additionally there can be no changes to these plan sets. They must be used "as is".
